I do not post assignments for grade 5 outside of our "This Week" announcements since it is of great importance for the 5th graders to learn how to keep track of their things this year. They especially need to learn to be responsible for themselves, their work, and their behavior. This is all a part of the growing that goes on during this school year. It prepares them for middle school. It also prepares them for life!
The students are assigned a book report from a different genre, using different book report forms each month, from October to April.
The assignment is only given on the first school day of each of the months of October through April.
Each student must get their book checked by Mrs. Pieper before reading the book.

It is very important that each student in fifth grade learns to use their assignment notebook and portfolio folder to keep track of their assignments and their worksheets etc. This readies them for Middle School.
Inside of the back cover of their assignment notebook and in the Grade 5 Information booklet they have reminders of how to use these two excellent tools.
Here is a copy of the sheet so that you are able to support their use of these tools as they grow in being responsible for themselves and their work....
How to Use Assignment Notebook and Portfolio File
(or accordion file folder)
Assignment notebook
1. Prepare notebook page for the day during the allotted time every morning. (All students do this at the same time.)
2. Write assignments down immediately as I write them down on the white board or when other teachers give assignments.
3. Check the white board at the end of the day again to make sure that you have everything written down as all assignments are written down and left on the white board until a new assignment is given in each area.
4. When you finish an assignment, mark it off in your notebook.
5. Keep track of what you have to take home and return, at
the bottom of the page in area provided.
Portfolio File
1. Place all papers into designated areas at ALL times.
2. Place anything that needs to go home in the front pocket.
3. When at home….designate a specific time every day and take everything out of the FRONT pocket with a parent present.
4. Go through it with parent, giving them the work to see and have them sign anything right away that needs signing.
5. Immediately, before putting the portfolio back in backpack, place signed slips right back into the front pocket.
6. When you get to school in the morning and are unpacking your backpack you are to bring up anything to me that is in the front
pocket.
